Describing it as the “Great Sedition” is not an exaggeration. The sedition that began during the reign of the Rightly-Guided Caliph “Uthman” and extended to the caliphate of “Ali and his sons” almost destroyed the Islamic state. It and its consequences are still under study; many pens have addressed it in an attempt to reach the well of truth. The most prominent of these was “Taha Hussein” who tried, through his literary style, to discuss one of the most dangerous and sensitive issues in Islamic history. The author sought to follow the doctrine of “historical neutrality” between the two groups, and to be free of all whims or inclinations; seeking to highlight the real reasons behind the sedition that led to the murder of Uthman, relying on analyses of the reality of Islamic society at that time. As usual, his opinions sparked a violent wave of criticism that continues to this day, while another group praised him who saw in his approach and conclusions fairness and a search for the truth.
